General
The aim of this ViewMap website is to photographically cover the entire area of the North York Moors National Park so that wherever
you click on a detailed map you will see at least one image that includes that location.
At present there are many gaps, mainly in the South of the Park, but these will be progressively filled.
As the main aim is coverage, some of the images have less interest than others, although we try our best!
As at the 14th of December 2006 there are 2489 images in the database.
Navigation
Because many of the web pages are dynamic it is often necessary to use your browser Back button, for example
to return to the thumbnail page from the full image page or to return to the full image from the map view page.
Searching the image database
There are two methods. One is to enter one or more words or part words into the search box. The captions of the images will be
searched, and any that contain all of your search words or part words will be selected. The other method is to click any point
on a detailed map. Any images that contain this location will be selected. Each image has been orientated according to the angle
of view and the distance that can be seen. However some selected locations that are in range will be hidden behind higher ground
and will not be visible in the image. Future versions of the software might be developed to take account of this and will
not select images in which the selected location is hidden.
Show View on Map Page
There are two types of image. One type is a view which can be represented on the map by two lines showing the angle
of view from the camera position. A small circle will show the point that you clicked on the detailed map if this is the
method that you chose. If you searched using words then there will be no circle. The other type of image is essentially a close up of a feature,
and this is shown by just a circle.
Copyright
The map images are Crown Copyright and must not be copied in any circumstances. The photographic images are all copyright and
must not be copied without written permission. Permission for personal use on a web site will normally be given
on condition that the image is attributed and a link to this site is provided. Permission for any commercial use can be obtained for
an appropriate licence fee. Original images are either 35mm slides or 6mpixel Nikon D70 DSLR Raw files.
